Steve Berkoff is a phenomenon. Among artists working in the theatre today he is probably the most theatrical - his special combination of speech, movement and spectacle is uniquely powerful. Here are the texts of three plays: West, a jolting view of life in the city; Lunch, a slightly tragic vignette of non-commitment between strangers; and Harry's Christmas, about individual isolation. In his introduction, Pete Townshend says: 'It isn't easy to commit to Berkoff because he demands all or nothing. When you watch him act, especially in one of his own plays, he is compelling and disturbing. But when you read the lines of his plays away from the atmospheric tension that the theatre provides, the challenge he proposes is directly aimed at all the preconceptions we British hold dearest... I hope you are as stirred by these plays as I have been'.
